Sociology

Year 12-13 Curriculum rationale

Curriculum Intent:

Sociology helps students make sense of the world they live in by exploring how individuals and groups are shaped by social structures, processes, and cultures. The curriculum is designed to build from broad foundations (socialisation and perspectives), into focused areas (Families, Education, Crime, Media), with research methods and theoretical debates woven throughout.

Our intent is that students:

  • Develop critical thinking by comparing perspectives and challenging “common sense” views of society.
  • Apply sociological evidence to contemporary issues such as family diversity, educational inequalities, crime, and the role of the media.
  • Gain transferable skills such as analysis, evaluation, extended writing, and the ability to weigh up evidence.
  • Become reflective citizens, able to consider how policies and social change affect individuals and communities.
